Professor Paul Tyson Receives Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching

Spring, 2009 Convocation

June, 2009: This year, 892 students graduated from programs in the Faculty of Social Sciences.  Convocation ceremonies were held on June 11, where Dr. Ken Kernaghan, O.C., Professor Emeritus (Political Science), and Dr. Zopito Marini (Child and Youth Studies) gave convocation addresses to those in attendance.  It was a wonderful time for the students to celebrate their academic successes with friends, family, and professors.  The Faculty of Social Sciences wishes all of our students the best of luck as they head on to new horizons.  Congratulatons go out to all.


Undergraduate Student Receives International Honour

Mark Morrissey, one of our undergraduate psychology majors, was just awarded placement in a NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION Summer School of Behavioral Neuroendocrinology (SSBNE).  This is a week-long course that involves a consortium of faculty from the University of Massachusetts, Michigan State University, Georgia State University, Emory University, Clark Atlanta University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Morehouse College, Morehouse Medical School, Morris Brown College, Spelman College, Ohio State University, Northwestern University and the University of Michigan.  This is quite an honour.  He is one of only ten recipients from a pool of international applicants.  The Faculty extends its congratulations to Mark, and wishes him all the best at the SSBNE this summer.


Roelof Makken Receives Award

May, 2009:  The Faculty of Social Sciences extends congratulations to Roelof Makken (Department of Economics) who has been awarded the inaugural Clarke Thomson Award for Excellence in Sessional Teaching.  This award recognizes contributions to student learning at Brock by its part time / sessional teaching staff.  Clarke Thomson is a professor emeritus who, throughout his university career, promoted the support, development and recognition of university teaching. He was responsible for the establishment of the Instructional Development Office (now the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Educational Technologies) and was Brock University's first recipient of a national 3M teaching award (1989). 


Barry Grant Receives Award

Spring, 2009:  Dr. Barry Grant was recently awarded the 3rd annual Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS) Pedagogy Award.  SCMS is the largest and most important international professional association devoted to the scholarly study of film, television, video, and new media.  The Pedagogy Award is presented to an academic who shows well-rounded excellence in three areas – outstanding teaching practice, influential pedagogical materials, and effective service to the field of cinema and media study.   This is a well-deserved honour for Dr. Grant, who has been teaching at Brock for 34 years.  Upon being notified of the award, Dr. Grant said “I am especially honoured to be have won this this award, which acknowledges the importance of teaching in the discipline of Film Studies.”  The award will be announced at this year’s SCMS conference in Tokyo, and will be presented formally at next year’s conference in Los Angeles, which will celebrate SCMS’s 50th anniversary. 


Aboriginal Achievement Award, 2009

Members of the Department of Economics and the Faculty of Social Sciences would like to extend best wishes to John Waylon Henhawk, a TA in the Economics Department.  He has been chosen to receive the undergraduate Aboriginal Achievement Award in 2009.  Although John's major is Finance, he has been very involved in TAing and taking courses in the Economics department.  Judith Knight, a graduate student in the Faculty of Social Sciences, has received the graduate Aboriginal Achievement Award in 2009.  Judith is currently working on her Masters degree in Social Justice and Equity.  She is studying women and traditional healing methods as part of her research.  Congratulations are extended to both of these fine students.  We wish you the best of luck in all future endeavours.


Faculty of Social Sciences TA Award, 2009

Congratulations go out to Alyson Trotter, the recipient of the inaugural Faculty of Social Sciences TA Award.  Aly is a TA in the Child and Youth Studies Department.  She was selected for this award due to her dedication to teaching and learning in the many undergraduate seminars that she has taught, as well as the assistance that she offers to the faculty members with whom she has worked.  Further information about this award can be found at www.brocku.ca/fss/FSS-Teaching-Assistant-1.pdf.

 


Policing Fair - February, 2009

February, 2009: We recently welcomed representatives from police forces around the province to share information with students.  Representatives from the Canadian Armed Forces (Military Police), the RCMP, and a number of regional police forces came to Brock to discuss career opportunities with anyone who may be interested in a career in policing.  For further information, contact Jeanette Ramsay (jramsay@brocku.ca), the Coordinator of the Policing and Criminal Justice Program.

Ryan Plummer Receives CMHC Award

December, 2008: The Faculty of Social Sciences congratulates Ryan Plummer (Tourism and Environment) on being awarded the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Excellence in Education Award.  This award recognizes Ontario educators who integrate sustainable concepts in housing and community development into their teaching.  Dr. Plummer has focused his teaching and research on the human-environment interface, specifically on the subject of environmental management. 


Janet Conway Honoured with Canada Research Chair

Fall, 2008: The Faculty of Social Sciences would like to recognize the Canada Research Chair in Social Justice that was recently received by Janet Conway.  Dr. Conway is a member of the Sociology Department, and also a member of the faculty in the Social Justice and Equity graduate program.  She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in social movements and feminism.  She is a social justice activist, whose reserach focuses on the World Social Forum.  Congratulations to are extended to Dr. Conway.  


 

Faculty Members Honoured at Fall 2008 Convocation 

Fall, 2008: The Faculty extends its congratulations to two of our fine professors who will be honoured at the Fall, 2008 Convocation ceremony. 

Professor John McNamara from the Department of Child and Youth Studies, will receive the Brock University Award for Distinguished Teaching.  This award recognizes a faculty member who has shown excellence in teaching by providing quality learning experiences for students, mentoring teaching colleagues, and developing top-quality curricula.  He also received the Brock University Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching at Spring Convocation this year, so this is the second time that he has been recognized for his fine teaching at Brock University.

Professor Maurice Feldman from the Centre for Applied Disability Studies, will receive the Brock University Award for Distinguished Research and Creative Activity. He is being recognized not only for his consistently outstanding research achievements, but also because he has provided excellent training of future researchers.


Policing Program Renewed

Fall, 2008: Brock University, Niagara College and the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) have officially renewed the articulation agreement for the joint Collaborative Study in Policing and Criminal Justice (CSPCJ) program.  The program -- the only one of its kind in Canada -- responds to the need for police professionals with a solid academic background and applied skills and knowledge in areas of policing and criminal justice by facilitating students' transition between both post-secondary institutions, and providing valuable real-world learning opportunities with the NRPS.  Students in this accelerated program are able to earn both a degree from Brock in one of a number of disciplines, as well as a diploma in Police Foundations from Niagara College in only four years.  For further information, please contact the Coordinator of the program, Jeanette Ramsay (jramsay@brocku.ca), or see www.brocku.ca/policing/.


The Faculty Says Goodbye to Dean Siegel and Welcomes Dean Dunk

On June 30, 2008, we said goodbye as Dean Siegel stepped down from his position as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. For six years, Dean Siegel led us with a vision that inspired all faculty members, staff members, and students. We were all able to reach new heights under his wonderful guidance. On July 1, 2008, we welcomed Dean Thomas Dunk as our new leader. Dean Dunk comes to us from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay where he was Dean of Social Sciences and Humanities. We are all very excited as the Faculty continues to develop excellent research and teaching, as well as outstanding graduate and undergraduate programs under his guidance over the coming years.


Senior Achievement Award

Spring, 2008: Senior Achievement AwardNancy Johnston, professor in the Psychology Department, was recently honours with an Ontario Senior Achievement Award at Queen’s Park.  The Ontario Senior Achievement Award honours those who have made outstanding contributions to their communities after turning 65.  Dr. Johnston was honoured because of her work teaching Psychology here at Brock, and for her work as a clinical child psychologist in the Niagara Region.  She has done outstanding work with many children over the years, specializing in assisting those who have suffered from sexual abuse.  Dr. Johnston was presented the award by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable David C. Onley, and Aileen Carroll, the Ontario Minister Responsible for Seniors.


Collaborative Program Reception

The Faculty of Social Sciences hosted a reception at the end of January, 2008 to celebrate the collaborations that we have with community colleges in Southern Ontario. Students who are majoring in many disciplines across the Faculty of Social Sciences will now have the opportunity to complete both a degree and a diploma in an accelerated fashion (both are completed concurrently in the time it would typically take to complete a degree). Chancellor’s Chair for Research Excellence

Professor Mike Ashton, Department of Psychology, has recently won the Chancellor’s Chair for Research Excellence, 2007.  This Brock award recognizes individuals who demonstrate excellence in their scholarly research and creative abilities, and have made exceptional contributions to the advancement of their field. Professor Ashton is a social psychologist specializing in personality variations. His research will examine the political views that may be related to certain dimensions of personality and explore the possibility of predicting ethical decisions based on those traits.


Brock University Distinguished Research and Creativity Award

Congratulations to Dr. Stefan Brudzynski who has been awarded the Brock University Distinguished Research & Creativity Award, 2007. This award has been offered since 1994, and is designed to “recognize outstanding research achievements, contributions toward the training of future researchers, and consistency in scholarly or creative performance”. In 2001, Dr. Brudzynski was also awarded the Brock University Award for Distinguished Teaching. This award recognizes a significant commitment to providing and developing quality learning experiences for students in addition to valuable contributions in curriculum development and mentoring of colleagues. Congratulations to Dr. Brudzynski for being rewarded for his fine research and teaching.


Faculty Member Receives Teaching Award from BUSU

The 2007 Brock University Students' Union Teaching Excellence Award was recently awarded to Marilyn Cottrell in the Department of Economics. This award is nominated by Brock students and the award is presented to a professor who consistently demonstrates an effort designed to enrich the undergraduate experience through an engaging lecture style, facilitating challenging discussion and making that extra personal effort to inspire students' thirst for knowledge.
